Over the last 10 years, we at Ayni have trained and coached leaders and activists from hundreds of different organizations. Throughout this time, we have also done research and grown in our capacity as leaders committed to social change for a lifetime. These four workshops will be on advanced themes in leadership and cultural analysis that speak to the constraints of what it means to be part of a lifetime of social change work.

Advanced Leadership: Between 2 Worlds

May 15th, 2023 6:00pm EST - 8:30pm EST

Leadership is not easy. The heat of political campaigns, organizational needs, holding space for the many traumas that exist in our people, dealing with so much pain but at the same time remaining hopeful. These are just some of the struggles that many leaders are dealing with in the world. Social change is work for the brave.

Leadership is, at its core, dealing with uncertainty. A leader is born when they decide to run to the burning house and save as many as they can. Yet in the journey of leadership, of doing this over and over again, leaders can get confused with what it means to be holding (as healthy as we can) the tension of change.

Sometimes leaders begin to become either extremely pragmatic – to the extent that they believe nothing will truly change, or that the status quo is all we have and change is minimal. On the other extreme, leaders abandon the tension of the world to create idealized versions of change that become purist and disconnected. In the tradition of community organizing, the framework of the world as it and world as it should be has been deeply important to honor the tensions of leadership and be mindful of falling into traps over idealism or pragmatism.

The purpose of this workshop is to reflect on our leadership psychology and develop new perspectives in how to hold the tension of leadership in a better way (or healthier way).

Some of the topics we will cover are:

  • Core definitions and perspectives of leadership
  • The framework of the “World as It Is” and the “World as it Should Be” in order to understand the two worlds that all leaders are constantly navigating/managing
  • The 4 traps of no-leadership
  • Educational, contemplative and support practices for holding the tension of the two worlds

Below is the Rooted Leadership Series Calendar

When enrolling into this series, you are agreeing to abide by Ayni School’s Student Guidelines below.

  • Be respectful – Because of the online nature of the school, we might not know each other, where we are coming from, have different perspectives, backgrounds, beliefs, etc. Because of this, it can be really easy to misinterpret each other. We ask that participants be respectful of each other (and of the trainers) and the experiences that we each have.
  • Be present – Please turn on your camera as much as possible to improve the interactive nature of the training. It makes a big difference in the dynamic of the school if we are able to see each other and our reactions.
  • Support the School – We hold the expectation that you are not sharing links (or materials) to the modules with others who have not registered for the Semester and are abiding honestly by our pricing tiers to the best of your ability.
  • Recordings of the session will not be made available to participants. If you cannot attend a session, we recommend you attend it at another date and time. Supplemental material and slides will be provided and if you would like to experience a module again, you can always repeat before the Semester is over.
  • Honor our time together – There will be breaks that are scheduled during the length of a module, please wait for them as best you can. We also ask that you mute your microphone on Zoom while you are not talking and to write any pressing questions on the chat of the Zoom room so as to not interrupt the trainers.

At the Ayni Institute we are committed to providing high quality trainings that are accessible and support social change leaders, organizations, and movements dedicated to building a more reciprocal world.

We have been inspired by the many models of pricing by scale and gift economies. Please take a few minutes to assess the right tier that you belong to according to our system.

There are two types of tiers. To determine which of the two tiers to look at, please decide: are you paying out of pocket or are you being sponsored by an organization?
